Why calls cut out when you remove an earbud (Automatic Ear Detection)

AirPods are designed to pause audio automatically when they're removed from your ears—this includes live phone/audio calls. While convenient for media playback, it can cause issues during Coviu Phone calls if you momentarily remove an earbud. The call remains active, but audio can pause or cut out unexpectedly. This behavior is controlled by your AirPods settings.

How to turn off Automatic Ear Detection on Mac

Follow these steps on a Mac running macOS:

  1. Make sure your AirPods are connected to your Mac and in your ears.

  2. Open System Settings or System Preferences via the Apple menu.

  3. Go to Bluetooth, then find your AirPods in the device list.

  4. Click the Options button (or the “ⓘ” next to them).

  5. Toggle “Automatic ear detection” to Off.

This setting ensures that audio will not pause when you remove one or both AirPods during a call.

Workaround for Windows PC users

AirPods don't offer a built-in ear detection toggle in Windows, but there is a workaround:

  • Connect your AirPods to an iPhone or iPad first.

  • Disable Automatic Ear Detection on that Apple device as detailed above.

  • Then pair your AirPods with your Windows PC without disconnecting from the phone immediately afterward.

Users have reported this keeps ear detection disabled even when switching to PC.

Additional Tips

  • Fully disconnect and re-pair your AirPods after changing this setting to ensure it's applied.

  • If using the same pair across multiple devices, disabling ear detection on one device may carry over.

  • If issues persist, consider using wired headphones or a Bluetooth headset built for PC stability.
